What is MSS Standard ?

MSS (Manufacturers Standardization Society of the Valve and Fittings Industry) is a non-profit technical association dedicated to developing and improving national and international standards for valves, pipe fittings, flanges, gaskets, and related piping components.

MSS standards are widely recognized throughout the piping industry and provide practical engineering requirements that promote safety, reliability, interchangeability, and consistent manufacturing practices.

MSS standards are extensively used across a wide range of industries, including oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, nuclear energy, water treatment, wastewater, and other industrial process facilities.

Today, MSS is supported by more than 100 member companies that collaborate through numerous technical committees to develop, review, and maintain industry standards for piping systems and pressure-containing components.

MSS is an ANSI-accredited standards developer, meaning its standards are created in accordance with the procedures established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
ANSI regularly audits and approves MSS’s standards development process to ensure openness, balance, due process, and consensus. Standards intended for national recognition undergo committee review, public comment, and final approval before publication.

In addition to publishing its own standards, MSS actively participates in the development of international engineering codes and standards.
The society collaborates with organizations such as ASME, ANSI, ASTM International, and API, appointing technical representatives to exchange expertise and promote harmonized engineering practices across the global piping industry.
