The ASME B5 Committee is responsible for developing standards related to machine tools, machining systems, cutting tools, and the fundamental components used in manufacturing equipment.

The committee establishes uniform engineering requirements that promote accuracy, performance, interchangeability, and safety across a wide range of machine tool applications.

The scope of the ASME B5 Committee includes the standardization of machine tools, cutting tools, machine tool components, and the operating practices associated with their use in manufacturing processes. Typical areas covered include:

  • Tool holding systems and tool holders
  • Machine tool drive mechanisms that are integral to machine tools
  • Associated components, accessories, and attachments
  • Nomenclature, dimensional sizes, and machine capacities
  • Machine tool accuracy testing and performance evaluation
  • Machine element movements, positioning, and adjustment systems

In addition to developing American national standards, ASME B5 serves as the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO Technical Committee 39 (ISO/TC 39 – Machine Tools).

Through this role, the committee contributes U.S. technical expertise to the development and harmonization of international machine tool standards.
