IEC TC 37 – Surge Arresters

IEC Technical Committee 37 (IEC TC 37) develops International Standards for surge arresters used in electrical power systems to protect equipment against overvoltage conditions.
These standards define the design, performance, testing, installation, and maintenance requirements for surge protection devices in high-voltage and low-voltage applications.

IEC TC 37 publications cover metal-oxide surge arresters, gapless arresters, and related protective technologies used in transmission and distribution networks.
The standards ensure effective protection against lightning strikes, switching surges, and transient overvoltages that can damage transformers, switchgear, and other critical infrastructure.

List of Standard (IEC TC 37):

  1. IEC 60099-1 –1999 Surge arresters – Part 1: Non-linear resistor type gapped surge arresters for a.c. systems
  2. IEC 60099-4 –2014 Surge arresters – Part 4: Metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps for a.c. systems
  3. IEC 60099-5 –2018 Surge arresters – Part 5: Selection and application recommendations
  4. IEC 60099-6 –2019 Surge arresters – Part 6: Surge arresters containing both series and parallel gapped structures – System voltage of 52 kV and less
  5. IEC PAS 60099-7 –2004 Surge arresters – Part 7: Glossary of terms and definitions from IEC publications 60099-1, 60099-4, 60099-6, 61643-1, 61643-12, 61643-21, 61643-311, 61643-321, 61643-331 and 61643-341
  6. IEC 60099-8 –2017 Surge arresters – Part 8: Metal-oxide surge arresters with external series gap (EGLA) for overhead transmission and distribution lines of a.c. systems above 1 kV
  7. IEC 60099-9 –2014 Surge arresters – Part 9: Metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps for HVDC converter stations
