
Piping materials refer to the types of materials used to manufacture Piping components in industrial piping systems. These components include pipes, fittings, and valves.

The material chosen largely determines the performance, durability, and suitability of the piping system, especially in heavy industries like oil & gas and Petroleum.
Overview of Piping Materials
Materials for piping are generally classified into two main groups:
- Metallic materials
- Non-metallic materials
In industrial applications, metallic materials, especially iron-based ones, are the most commonly used.
Major Metallic Piping Materials
- Carbon Steel (CS)

Carbon steel is one of the most widely used materials in industrial piping, particularly in oil & gas plants and other heavy industrial facilities. It is popular due to its low cost and wide availability. However, carbon steel is prone to corrosion when exposed to air and moisture, so in more corrosive environments stainless steel is often preferred instead.
Common standards for carbon steel piping materials include:
ASTM A106 and ASTM A53 for carbon steel pipes
ASTM A105 and ASTM A234 for carbon steel fittings
Carbon steel components are typically connected by welding.
- Stainless Steel (SS)

Stainless steel, often abbreviated “SS,” is the second most common metallic piping material after carbon steel. It is widely used in applications that require higher corrosion resistance.
Connections between stainless steel pipes and fittings are usually made by welding.
- Alloy Steel (AS)

Alloy steel has similar uses to carbon steel but generally offers higher strength and better performance in specific conditions. It is abbreviated “AS” in project documentation. Alloy steel piping components are also typically joined by welding, using procedures similar to those for carbon steel.
- Galvanized Steel

Galvanized steel refers to carbon steel that has been coated with a layer of zinc to enhance corrosion resistance. In piping drawings this material is often marked with the abbreviations GAL or GA.
Because welding can damage the protective zinc coating, galvanized steel pipes and fittings are usually joined by threaded connections rather than welding.
Other Metallic Materials
Other metal materials with more limited industrial use include:
- Copper-nickel alloys
- Aluminum
- Copper
- Other specialty metal alloys
